Protecting Ourselves from Harm
In continuing with personal security, here are some valuable safety tip that can aid you in securing yourself from potential threats.
• Whenever possible, carry a cell phone – communication devices offer support
• Know your destination – try to plan your route to minimize the chances of becoming lost
• Be aware of your surroundings – if it feels uncomfortable, try to avoid it and know your exits
• Trust your instincts – in most cases if it feels wrong, it usually is
• Walk assertive – be aware and don’t display vulnerability
• Walk where there is good lighting – darkness benefits attackers
• Avoid walking close to recessed doorways and corridors – potential threats use these to their advantage
• Safety in numbers – most attackers prey on vulnerable individuals
• Keep accessories out of sight – accessories give motive for assault
• Minimize your load – loading up both hands increases the possibility of attack
• Ensure any carry bag is secured – open or unsecured flap and pockets make things easy to grab
• Don’t reveal information – avoid giving out personal information to those you don’t know
• Look to resolve, not escalate – effective conflict resolution teaches you how to defuse conflict
• Don’t release personal identification – information on ID cards and PIN’s should remain private
• Keep your keys safe – it is pointless locking things if your keys are made available for the take
• Lock your vehicle doors – keep doors locked when you are either in or away from your vehicle
• Lock your windows – keep windows no more than 2 inches open to prevent hands from reaching in
• If your vehicle break down, stay in it – either call for assistance or ask someone else to do so if assistance is offered by a stranger
• Sit near the driver on public transport – sitting out of the drivers view is a potential threat
If you suspect you are being followed:
1. Cross the street if on foot
2. Honk the horn to draw attention if driving
3. Go to the nearest visually populated area
4. Call the Police
5. Do not go home
Many criminals pick victims at random, choosing those who appear to be easy prey. If you appear self-assured, there is less chance that someone will pick you as their next victim.
MOST IMPORTANTLY USE COMMON SENSE.
IF SOMETHING DOESN’T FEEL QUITE RIGHT.
THE CHANCES ARE IT PROBABLY IS NOT.
WATCH, LOOK & LISTEN.
